My First 5K

Posted by rockcat on April 21, 2008

I posted my thoughts after my first 5K here. I finished it 40:52, and I had a great time.

Looks Like I’m “Officially” Employed

Posted by rockcat on April 21, 2008

Well for the first time in almost six years I have a “real” job. Its a part-time relief worker position – maybe one shift every week or two, maybe more. And it will be interesting work with a great company. Just what I need to stretch myself (working with teens) and have a break from myself, but not to much that I will lose focus on my family or my business. I start training tomorrow, and I’m looking forward to it.

Popeye Lives Here

One of our larger matchbox-style cars has fallen apart. I know this because David walked up earlier today with one wheel in his mouth and the other (still attached to the axle) sticking out like a candy cane. Like any good mother I told him to take that out of his mouth. He looked up, grinned (this boy has a gorgeous grin) and said, “I popeye the sailor man, too toot”. So cute.

In other news, I have about 40 new kohlrabi growing! I’m so excited, I don’t have a green thumb and I actually managed to grow something. Now I just have to keep them alive. I planted some pepper seeds for Kevin earlier, and I will try to start some corn soon.

My Tralog

Posted by rockcat on April 16, 2008

Well inspired by Leo at Zen Habits having a public training log (”tralog”), I decided to post a link to my online fitness log here and in my sidebar. I used Map My Ride last year, but I like Sweat365 better because its more free form, I can enter comments, and to enter a workout I only have to fill in one page (Map My Ride takes three pages).

Sweat365 is based on a multi-user Wordpress with plugins adding workout and daily health logs, its also free. You can enter workouts as General Cardio, Cycling, Running, Flexibility, Strength Training and Other. I wish I could add a custom workout type for Taekwondo (I was told that is a planned as an upcoming feature). For now I use the Other category for all / only Taekwondo. Access to workout stats (mainly graphs showing how you divide your workout time) makes this better than a plain blog; at least to me.

I’m not into calorie counting (in case you can’t tell). I don’t have time and I want to make a life long change. I’m trying to eat only when I’m physically hungry and not because of boredom, stress, greed or any other reason. Basically I’m relearning to love God and run to Him with my needs, and to use food only for fuel. I am wrapping up my Philippians study, so I restarted The Lord’s Table – a free, Bible based, online study to help people refocus on God. You even get a mentor to help you! So click here and check them out.

For the same reason, my goal is not to lose weight. My goal (right now) is to improve my fitness and earn my Blackbelt in November. I am also trying new things, on Sunday I will be running a 5K. I have tried a fruit smoothie, a green smoothie and soy milk this week. Later this year (probably July) I want to bike a century. I am cutting back on sugar filled foods and eating fresh fruit instead.

So by doing all this I will lose weight and have a lot more fun (I hope). I’m trying to think of a cool present for myself after I reach my goal – like a Vitamix, an Xtracycle or a set of adjustable dumbbells – something huge thats super-motivating. Of course, being a Blackbelt will be awesome on its own.

What An Idiot

Posted by rockcat on April 15, 2008

Ok – idiot is not a strong enough word. An underage drunk driver took police on a high speed (up to 110 mph) chase through some of Kalispell’s residential areas. Of course the first commenter hints that its the police’s fault for chasing him. Apparently he almost hit her. The police were pursuing because he was (originally) driving the wrong way on Highway 93. So 20 years old, drunk and driving by 5pm. I guess his goal is a Darwin award.

As a side note, Wordpress did a great job on the 2.5 release – the new admin area is so relaxing and uncluttered – not to mention has the fabled “Web 2.0″ look.

How does he know ….

How does Leo @ Zen Habits know how our laundry system works? And I’ll give you a hint – its not the easy system.
